The 50th WSOP is in the books. For the first time in my life (since I started going in 1984), I missed the first nine days of the WSOP this year and played less than I usually do but it wasn’t a good WSOP for me (4 cashes for $28.7k but my entries totaled $42k). Still, I love playing at the WSOP and I had some chances.
My World Series Highlight – Tag-Team with James Holzhauer
The highlight of the WSOP for me was playing in an event I didn’t even cash in! It was the $1k tag-team event because my partner was James Holzhauer (a hugely popular figure in the U.S. as he won $2.5m on the quiz show Jeopardy). James is a professional sports bettor who lives in Vegas and had a 32-game win streak on Jeopardy. He played a lot of online poker (on partypoker) while in college so I contacted him and met him for lunch. I asked about playing in the tag-team event with me as well as being sponsored by partypoker in our MILLIONS event at Aria and possibly the main event of the WSOP. He had long standing family vacation plans during our MILLIONS event and the WSOP Main Event but agreed to play in two events at the WSOP, a $1500 NLH turbo and the tag-team event with me.
We had a huge press conference prior to the tag-team event as James playing at the WSOP created quite a buzz. He handled the press and the fans extremely well and the entire day was a lot of fun. We had agreed to donate 50% any winnings to Project 150 (a wonderful Las Vegas charity that provides support for homeless and disadvantaged high school students with food, clothing, school supplies, and hygiene essentials). Sadly, we didn’t cash but provided a lot of exposure for Project 150 (and we donated to the charity ourselves). FYI, ‘Jeopardy James’ plays good poker and made money for our team – I was the one who lost it! Hopefully, James can make it to our partypokerLIVE MILLIONS Caribbean Poker Party in the Bahamas at Baha Mar in November.
Like most poker players, I’m anxious to watch the Triton Poker million pound charity event in London sponsored by partypoker LIVE and streamed on the partypokerTV twitch channel. This unique event comprised of businessmen and poker pros will make poker history as it will be the largest buy-in in poker history as well as the largest first place prize, to say nothing of the feature of this tournament, donating over $2.5m to charity. “Congratulations” to Triton Poker, Rob Yong, and partypoker as this tournament has far exceeded all expectations. It’s really amazing because it was only contrived a few months ago!
Although I didn’t play in this spectacular Triton event, I was fortunate enough to play in the inaugural $1M buy-in ONE DROP tournament at the WSOP in 2012. It’s hard to explain the buzz and excitement of playing in a tournament of this magnitude, but I can assure you that even the weathered pros will have goosebumps at the table in this Triton event – playing for more than $20m up top! (It’ll also be the largest bubble in history!)
There’s a couple of great MILLIONS events on the horizon – the first is MILLIONS Europe at King’s Casino in August (which you can play Days 1 & 2 online on partypoker where if you advance to Day 3 at King’s, you’re already in the money) and then the incredible partypoker LIVE MILLIONS at the Caribbean Poker Party in the Bahamas at the luxurious Baha Mar in November. The main event is a $10k+$300 buy-in with a $10m guaranteed prize pool. Check out the satellites on partypoker to win a $16k package!
Thanks for your continued support of partypoker online and partypoker LIVE MILLIONS events. I hope to see you soon and good luck at the tables!
